boxplot

The box plot (a.k.a. box and whisker diagram) is a standardized way of displaying the distribution of data based on the five number summary: minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum. The central rectangle spans the first quartile to the third quartile, comprising the interquartile range (IQR). The line inside the rectangle shows the median and whiskers extend above and below the box as far out as 1.5 * IQR on each side of the median. Typically they represent the range of the data. However extreme or suspected outlier data points can be identified when they extend beyond the whiskers.
